World Down Syndrome Day- Understanding and Embracing Diversity

world down syndrome day blog.jpg

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), observed globally on March 21, holds immense significance.

Only by understanding and embracing diversity, can we create a world where everyone’s abilities are recognized and valued.

I am honoured to be close to this fantastic cause thanks to my cousin’s daughter Connie who is nothing less than a superstar and proves exactly why we should all be supporting this years theme, “Improve Our Support Systems.”, writes Sarah Griffiths..

Let’s delve into why this day matters and how we can contribute:

  1. Understanding Down Syndrome:
  • Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement present in humans. It has always been part of our diverse human condition.
  • To truly comprehend Down syndrome, we turn to those who know it best: individuals with Down syndrome themselves.

  1. Why March 21?:
  • The choice of March 21 is deliberate. It symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.
  • On this day, we celebrate the uniqueness and resilience of individuals with Down syndrome.

  1. End The Stereotypes:
  • The mission for WDSD 2025 is clear: Improve Our Support Systems. People with Down syndrome need support to live and be included in the community, like everyone else.

Families also need support, as they are often supporting their family member with Down syndrome.

Support is a key human right that helps make other rights possible.

How Can You Participate?:
