The topic of mentoring was up for discussion at the most recent BRUMWIM (Birmingham Women In Marketing) event, diving into the power of mentorship and how to make the most of the experience.

The event saw the official launch of the BRUMWIM mentor scheme, and championed the importance of finding a mentor, and the role women at every career stage could play in mentoring someone and/or being a supportive career partner.

BRUMWIM is a community initiative built to bridge the confidence gap for women in marketing, Birmingham’s creative industries, and for the city itself.

Committed to creating a space where every woman is valued, heard, and empowered, it works to break down the barriers holding women back - from the pay gap to career progression challenges, to balancing family and work.

Through mentorship, professional development, and community, BRUMWIM helps women - from students to board level - and Birmingham rise together.

Founded in 2024 by ten female marketers based in the West Midlands, with events sold out weeks in advance, BRUMWIM is not here to ask for change politely.

The interactive event allowed attendees to hear from women across different roles in marketing from agency founders and marketing directors, to heads of client services and junior talent.

The panel included the voices of Ibukun Oluleye (brand executive at Tribera), Kirstie Smith (marketing strategy consultant and co-founder of Social Circle) Fran Nolan (co-founder and managing director of Tribera, founder of BRUMWIM) and Holly Howard (head of client services at Tribera and panel host).

Ibukun Oluleye said: “I've learnt so much about myself, the career I want and how I can approach through mentorship. Whether a formal mentor or not; a few years senior or more; in a totally different industry or my ideal role - I loved sharing my experiences on the panel of how mentors have shaped my career as a young professional and my advice to other women looking for mentorship.”

Fran said: “We founded BRUMWIM to drive real change, empower women, and close the confidence gap – and this event brought that vision to life. It was incredible to see BRUMWIM become a facilitator, connecting women at every career stage – from students to board-level leaders – with mentors and career partners. Beyond that, we’ve built a network where women can feel confident that there are people ready and willing to support and empower them as they navigate their marketing careers in Birmingham.

“This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see how we continue to grow, collaborate, and deliver lasting impact.”
