What is a repair cafe
Written by ReCognition Circular
A repair cafe is a free meeting place where community members can bring broken items and work with skilled volunteers to fix them. It’s about repairing together, learning from each other, and promoting a more sustainable approach to our belongings.
What can we fix?
Our skilled volunteers can help with:
– Bicycles (basic repairs and maintenance)
– Clothing
– Household electronics (e.g. electric fans, lamps, radios, games consoles)
– Computers and laptops
– Small household appliances (e.g. toasters, kettles, vacuum cleaners, rice cookers)
How does it work?
- Bring your broken item to the cafe
- You’ll be matched with an appropriate repair expert
- Watch and learn as they diagnose and fix your item
- Our volunteers will explain what they’re doing
Important things to know
What we can fix
– Basic repairs that don’t require replacement parts
– Simple maintenance tasks
– Diagnostics and troubleshooting
– Items where the fix involves reattaching, resoldering, or adjusting existing components
What we cannot fix
– Items requiring replacement parts (unless you bring the parts with you)
– Devices with significant internal damage
– Smashed phone screens (unless you bring the correct replacement screen)
Please note
– The Repair Cafe is free, but donations are welcome, if you can afford to make them
– We cannot guarantee that we can fix everything
– Our volunteers will do their best to help
– If we can’t fix your item, we’ll try to explain why and suggest next steps
– You are responsible for your items – we’ll take care, but cannot accept liability for any damage
Tips for your visit
– Items should be reasonably clean
– For electronics, ensure batteries are charged or bring power cables
– If you know you need a specific part, please bring it with you
– Be prepared to stay and watch the repair process – it’s part of the learning experience!
