Mounjaro and Wegovy (‘Weight Loss Injections’)

Mounjaro and Wegovy are both prescription drugs that belong to a group of medications called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. They both work by mimicking GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone that manages hunger levels. This:

• Sends signals to your brain that you have eaten, making you feel fuller sooner
• Delays the emptying of your stomach, enhancing those feelings of fullness for longer periods of time
• Other benefits include stabilisation of blood glucose, reducing hunger pangs and ‘sugar cravings’, reducing snacking.
• There is also evidence that treatment can improve the severity of or even reverse type 2 diabetes

It is important to note that these treatments are designed to aid weight loss, but you will still need to follow dietary and exercise advice, and not rely on the injections to do all the work. If you do this, then the weight loss will be less, and is likely to reverse when medication is stopped.

Prescription-only

Mounjaro and Wegovy, like any weight loss injection, are only available on prescription. A doctor needs to check your suitability before prescribing it, to make sure this is a safe treatment for you. At The Oakley Medical Practice, you can be prescribed Wegovy or Mounjaro if you meet the following criteria:

• a body mass index (BMI) of 30+, or a BMI of 27-30 and a weight-related medical condition or risk factor, such as prediabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis etc
• you do not take any medications or have a medical condition that makes it unsafe to take weight loss medication
• you do not have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the injection

Which one is right for me?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are both effective and safe treatments that can be used alongside diet and exercise to help you lose and maintain a healthy weight. Knowing which one is right for you comes down to a few things:

• preference – you may have a personal preference on which treatment you would rather take
• suitability – one treatment may be safer for you to take than another because of your medical history, but a doctor can help you with this decision
• cost – although the cost of both treatments is similar, your budget may be better suited to one treatment than the other
• side effects – if you get side effects on one treatment and cannot continue, your doctor may recommend giving the other one a try instead

What happens next?

You will need to book a consultation with our doctor, who will assess your suitability for treatment, explain how it works, and demonstrate use of the pen device. We recommend that all patients undergo blood tests to check for diabetes, cholesterol issues, and thyroid, liver and kidney function, in order to exclude underlying problems. This will also help monitor your weight loss progress. The blood tests are not compulsory, but highly recommended. You will be weighed, your blood pressure checked, your BMI calculated, and you will self-administer your first injection under supervision to ensure you understand how the device works. We recommend monthly review, but once established on treatment, this can be extended to once every two months, as the dose is increased according to response. Medication is dispensed from the practice, so we are a ‘one stop shop’.
