University launches industry-focused PhD+ scholarship scheme

Aston University is launching a pioneering fully funded doctoral scholarship scheme designed to equip researchers with the skills that are crucial for success in the digital age and to meet the demands of the new industrial revolution powered by technology.

Building on the University’s  close working relationship with industry, PhD+ is the first UK programme to combine an industrial placement, continuing professional development (CPD) accreditation and provide training in advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) leadership and business as standard.

The innovative programme pairs individual research students with an industry partner who will contribute both financially and in-kind to the research project. This approach will elevate students’ learning and prepare them for both work and life within a changing world.

Research at Aston University is driven by three interdisciplinary themes of health, digital innovation and technology to create a lasting, positive impact across society, culture, health and the environment.

Projects on the PhD+ programme include developing automated deployment of competitive autonomous vehicles for aircraft service delivery with industry partner Aurrigo, an automated aviation technology company.

Other industrial partners include Domestic & General (D&G), Mondelez and leading European packaging company Coveris, as well the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The PhD+ programme is open to both home and international students and covers all University tuition fees regardless of nationality plus a stipend for three and a half years at UK Research Council rates.

Applications are now open and the first cohort of Aston PhD+ scholars is set to begin their studies in September 2025.
