UK’s first civilian air traffic control apprentice trained at Birmingham Airport

Pena Mason (pictured), from Birmingham Airport (BHX), has become UK’s first civilian Air Traffic Control Apprentice, having initially worked in various supporting roles within the aviation industry.

Partnering with Gloucestershire College, Global ATS successfully launched the UK's first Air Traffic Control apprenticeship scheme in July 2023. Following a selection process,

Pena began her training with Basic and Aerodrome courses at Global ATS, completing modules, lessons, and simulator sessions. Back at BHX, she started unit training, with her tasks regularly reviewed by her unit training manager.

Formal review meetings, held every 10-12 weeks, included Pena, BHX, Gloucestershire College, and Global ATS.

These meetings assessed progress, addressed challenges, set new targets, and evaluated previous goals. They are an example of the collaboration required from stakeholders to make this scheme possible for individuals wishing to become Air Traffic Controllers.

For Birmingham Airport, the success of the apprenticeship scheme has been profound, with a clear desire to continue the progression of candidates through the apprenticeship programme, cultivating the next generation of Air Traffic Controllers.

Pena Mason, air traffic control officer in training at BHX, expressing her excitement about the program, said: “Not only will I earn my ATCO license and a Level 5 Diploma at the end of the apprenticeship, but it will also open many doors for my future career within the industry.”

“The ATCO Apprentice Scheme is a major milestone for the industry and will create so many opportunities for future generations of ATCOs.”
