Traffic to be halted along Broad Street
Broad Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Sunday 10 September and Saturday 16 September 2023 in order to finish the second phase of the Birmingham Westside Metro extension.
The second phase of the Birmingham Westside Metro extension opened in July 2022. Since this date, the team at Midland Metro Alliance (MMA) have been busy completing finishing activities, including snagging works, and the next stage of these are due to begin from Sunday 10 September 2023.
This work will include resurfacing crossing points across various parts of Broad Street.
Work is scheduled to take place between Sunday 10 September and Saturday 16 September 2023 (inclusive)* and during this time Broad Street will be closed to vehicular traffic.
In order to expedite works and minimise overall disruption ahead of planned events in the area including freshers week, construction is planned to take place during both day and night-time hours.
Although every effort is made to minimise disruption, some of the activities will involve an element of noise as work will begin by excavating localised areas across Broad Street.
The team will utilise noise mitigation measures, including noise monitoring equipment and noise reduction barriers, as required.
Here's some other information which the team at MMA would like people to know ahead of the works beginning:
West Midlands Metro services will continue to serve Birmingham city centre throughout, to Library tram stop. Click here for more information on timetable and alternative journey planning.
Buses which usually travel along or stop on Broad Street will be using diverted routes for the brief time the finishing works are taking place. Bus users are recommended to check with their operator for further details and allow extra time for their journey.
Pedestrian access during construction will be maintained. Please be aware that crossing points will be changed at times as works progress.
Part of the works will mean the unavoidable relocation of a nearby loading bay and taxi provision from Broad Street; however, mitigations will be in place to ensure deliveries continue without interruption.
