Simpler Recycling reform is fast approaching! As businesses across England prepare for the changes, many still have lingering questions about what’s required.

Here’s a quick refresher and some key takeaways from SUEZ recycling and recovery UK’s recent expert panel discussion, ‘Simpler Recycling: Navigating the upcoming deadline with confidence’.

What is Simpler Recycling again?

It’s a recycling reform requiring businesses, schools, hospitals and other ‘non-household municipal premises’ in England to separate waste into key recycling streams, making recycling more consistent, efficient and effective.

Still unsure about compliance? Here’s what you need to know:

Can I mix all recyclables together?

No. Businesses must have separate collections for food waste.

Dry recyclable materials must be segregated into: plastic bottles (bottles, pots, tubs and trays), glass bottles and jars, metal (cans, tins and foil), cartons like Tetra Pak, and paper and cardboard.

What about small businesses?

If you have 10 full-time employees, you have until 31 March 2027 to comply.

However, if you have 10 or more employees, your deadline for complying with new recycling legislation is 31 March 2025.

What’s the biggest challenge right now?

Clear national communication is needed as some businesses are still in the dark. During the webinar poll:

  • 30 per cent struggle with bin availability
  • 28 per cent don’t fully understand the requirements
  • 39 per cent would switch waste providers if theirs weren’t ready

Amidst all these challenges, the SUEZ team is here to help – whether it’s expert advice or a free waste audit, we’ve got you covered.

What should businesses do now?

  • Check with you waste provider to ensure your collections are compliant.
  • Keep employees informed. Clear communication and bin labels (and placed in strategic locations) help avoid confusion.
  • Stay flexible as some businesses (like hospitals) may have special requirements.

Final thought: If you’re unsure, ask!

Need guidance? Ask your waste provider or local authority.

Still confused? Google Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) or the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) for official advice.

With only a couple of weeks left, quick action now can save businesses from last-minute headaches. Don’t wait – get your recycling sorted today!
