Recruitment agency hosts free event to help students build careers in sustainability
Worksmiths, a specialist recruitment agency in sustainability management, hosted a free event to guide students and recent graduates aspiring to build careers in Sustainability.
The event was held at the University of Birmingham in partnership with Worksmiths’ three placement students, Hannah Cox, Jessica Barr and Nadia Hadi,
It commenced with a talk by Zoe Hurley, head of sustainability at the University of Birmingham.
Zoe shared her career journey and offered practical advice to emerging talents, highlighting the importance of seizing opportunities for sustainability action in any job and joining professional networks.
Following Zoe, attendees engaged with Hershil Patel, associate director and sustainability lead for government and public agencies at Arcadis and Jaime Sullivan, Head of Sustainability at the Ministry of Justice, who joined the session online.
Drawing from his professional experience, Hershil advised people should follow their passion, learn about other disciplines and build their soft skills – capabilities needed in the Sustainability field.
Jamie provided insights into the Ministry's strategies for reducing environmental impact across its extensive estate, underscoring the role of policy and leadership in driving Sustainable practices.
The latter part of the event was dedicated to networking, allowing attendees to connect with a diverse group of Sustainability professionals.
From individuals in graduate schemes to seasoned experts, all speakers noted the enthusiasm and commitment of the next generation towards Sustainability careers.
The event attracted over 50 participants from various academic disciplines, with 12 professionals sharing their insights and tips.
The vibrant atmosphere facilitated meaningful conversations, leaving attendees inspired and with expanded professional networks.
A recurring theme among the professionals' narratives was the presence of a pivotal moment that steered them towards a career dedicated to the planet.
Employers and hiring managers are encouraged to engage with the passionate and proactive emerging talent eager to contribute to Sustainability.
Members of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce are invited to offer short-term placements, enabling emerging talents to gain the practical experience crucial for their professional development.
