Play about YMCA founder comes to Burton
A play depicting the life of YMCA founder George William will arrive in Burton to inform audiences about how the charity began.
‘Soul in the Machine’, will be staged on Thursday, 22 May at The Deer Barn (National Forest Adventure Farm). It will be performed by the Saltmine Theatre Company.
On 6 June 1844, in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, draper George Williams founded YMCA in London.
180 years on, YMCA has grown to serve more than 65 million people in 120 countries.
Over the years, the YMCA has adapted to the changing needs of communities and YMCA Burton is committed to helping people at times of need, regardless of gender, race, ability or faith through their vital support services.
Burton & District YMCA’s chief executive, Paul Laffey said: “The story of our founder George Williams is inspiring, fascinating and his legacy continues through the work of every YMCA in the global movement.
“This performance gives a fantastic insight in to the story of the humble beginnings of YMCA and George’s life.”
Paula Senior, fundraising & partnerships manager at YMCA Burton added: “YMCA Burton are delighted to be bringing this performance to Burton.
“As we reflect on our upcoming founders’ day on 6 June and celebrate 181 years of YMCA, it will be fantastic to share this show with supporters, friends and members of our community. Sharing the story of where it all began and raising awareness of the YMCA.”
