Students and staff at Burton and South Derbyshire College 's Stephen Burke Construction Academy have been working on an exciting collaborative project to create a giant wooden pavilion exhibition in the local area.

The Pavilion has been designed by students from the London Metropolitan University School of Art, Architecture and Design and constructed by students from Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC), utilising timber from National Forest woodlands provided by the National Forest Company. The project is supported by South Derbyshire District Council to strengthen the relationship between Swadlincote and the Forest.

BSDC staff and students have worked on the construction of the structure, including advising on construction restraints and liaising with South Derbyshire District Council and the National Forest Company who were part of the design judging panel.

The chosen design was by London Metropolitan University School of Art, Architecture and Design student, Ekaterina Glebova. BSDC Construction students have now brought the design to life in the College 's construction workshops, building a structure that can be 'flatpack ' erected at its future destination.

The project was instigated by architect, Robert Barnes who was born in Burton on Trent and teaches at London Metropolitan University. Robert approached the National Forest Company and South Derbyshire District Council to suggest the student-led project to highlight the proximities and connections between the Forest and the towns and villages embedded within it.

It is hoped that the Pavilion will be exhibited locally this Summer as part of a temporary exhibition which explores the many positive changes that the National Forest and the planting of millions of trees is bringing to the area - from creating new wildlife habitats, to helping to tackle climate change and supporting the growth of new enterprises.

Panels to promote the forthcoming structure were also created as part of a street exhibition which took place on The Delph market square in Swadlincote town centre. They were designed by Foundation Degree in Contemporary Creative Practice (Graphic Design) student, Harrison Chambers in collaboration with Mel Harris from design agency, Creative Melon.

Ian Vanes-Jones, Carpentry and Joinery Lecturer at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “The Pavilion project was a challenge for the students based on the size of the structure and it being a different kind of construction job that is not usually part of their qualification. We look forward to being on-site and erecting the structure so that others can see our creation! ”
