Lichfield venue The Hub at St Mary’s has a varied programme in store over the coming weeks – including live comedy, tribute acts and songwriter showcases.

Alter Comedy Club – Lichfield’s finest establishment for stand-up comedy – returns on Wednesday 11 September for a new season featuring some of the UK’s best award-winning acts.

MC for the evening will be Andy Robinson, who has performed over 4,000 gigs at places including Glee Clubs, Comedy Stores, Highlights and Jongleurs, as well as working as a warm-up artist for TV shows such as Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Shooting Stars, Later with Jools Holland and Jonathan Ross

Headlining Alter’s September gig is Manchester comedian Josh Jones – described as the most original voice to emerge from the North-West in recent years.
The show will also feature Becky Umbers, a multi-award-winning comedian from New Zealand. Tickets for the show are £14.

On 2 October, the new musical Sanctuary comes to the venue, telling a vital story of one man’s hopes for help and support in a time when not all strangers are welcomed.

Sanctuary is a new musical from the Red Ladder Theatre Company, documenting the story of Alland, a young Iranian man, who begs to be given sanctuary at St Mary’s church in a northern town.

It sparks a community to react in all the ways each member believes to be right. Molly, a young worker there, joins forces with vicar Fiona to resist both the angry vigilantes and the hard-hearted authorities beyond the church walls to try to protect Alland.

Holding a special community service where voices on all sides sing their songs of redemption and condemnation, Fiona asks the question to everyone present - do we give Alland over to the State or live up to our well-versed ideals of compassion?

Tickets for Sanctuary are £14.

We’re Not Going Back, a new show marking the 40th anniversary of the miner’s strike, comes to the venue on 10 October.

However, this hard-hitting musical comedy features no miners and no cops.

It instead, follows the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a branch of ‘Women Against Pit Closures’.

Tickets for the show are £14 for Unite members and £16 for general admission.

Transatlantic Folk are presenting an evening of songs and storytelling with the Songwriters Showcase on 11 October.

The event features songwriters Alicia Best (North Carolina), Banjo Jen (Sheffield) and Ellie Galvin (Lichfield), who will take it in turns to share songs in-the-round (Nashville style), with each performer offering an insight into the backstory and creation of their songs.

Audience members will also have the chance to field questions during the show. Tickets are £15.

The Doors Rising will be bringing the sounds of legendary band The Doors on Saturday 12 October.

Expect all the hits including ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Riders On The Storm’ and ‘Break On Through’ (plus a few surprises).

Tickets for The Doors Rising are £17.
