Birmingham Botanical Gardens has opened a new artisan café in its grounds by Medicine Bakery.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both partners, uniting a shared passion for natural ingredients, sustainability, and community spirit in a setting that promises to become a stylish new hub for locals and visitors alike.

Medicine Bakery, known for its independent spirit and community-driven approach, operates seven locations across Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Once at the heart of Birmingham’s nightlife, Medicine has evolved into a thriving café and bakery, staying true to its creative, community-driven roots.

After the closure of the legendary Medicine Bar in Digbeth in 2011, founders Simon and Francesca Jones set out on a new path - artisan baking.

From their Wolverhampton HQ, they’ve mastered the craft of pastries, cakes and sourdough bread inspired by French and New York baking traditions while using locally sourced, ethical ingredients.

Medicine chooses iconic buildings, flooded with natural light.

For years, the team have been looking for the perfect green space to complement their portfolio and now, they’ve found it at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Visitors to the café at the Gardens will find the signature Medicine touch to the interiors - from comfy sofa seating to their famous cake counter stacked with handcrafted treats.

Alongside locally roasted, barista coffee, guests can enjoy cakes and pastries, and savoury treats to go or dine on the terrace with stunning garden views.

On weekends, Medicine’s beloved brunch menu will be on offer, with exclusive discounts for Botanical Garden and Independent Birmingham members.

Looking ahead to summer, Medicine Bakery is set to launch new products including an exclusive ‘Medicine Picnic Hamper’, designed especially for the Gardens.

Chris Maher, head of Commercial and Visitor Services at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, commented on the new partnership: “We’re delighted to welcome Medicine Bakery as a new partner.

“We’re excited to work with a distinguished Brummie business to create a destination café at the Gardens.

“Medicine’s values and commitment to quality align closely with our own, and we believe their reputation for excellence in service and food will be an amazing addition for all visitors.

“We have a huge spring and summer programme of events and activities ahead at the Gardens and we can’t wait for this key part of our visitor and events offer to open.

“This partnership will also be a huge addition to the Gardens venue hire offer, including away days, conferences and weddings.”

Open seven days a week during the Gardens’ operating hours, the new Medicine Bakery café provides a contemporary meeting place where tradition meets creativity.

It offers a warm, inviting environment designed to celebrate the beauty of nature and culinary artistry, underscoring a shared vision for a vibrant community space in the heart of Birmingham.

To visit Medicine Bakery’s new café, visitors will need a Birmingham Botanical Gardens Day ticket – or become a Gardens Member for free year-round access.

The café is also launching  an early bird ticket offer with 20 per cent off over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
