Museums commemorate Black History Month
Black History Month is being celebrated this October across Birmingham Museum Trust sites with various exciting events and talks that commemorate the history and achievements of Black people in the UK.
The aims of Black History Month are to promote knowledge and understanding of Black history and culture at a local and national level, as well as reflect on what needs to be done in order to continue the fight against racism.
Events at the Birmingham Museums include 'A Talk About Black Tudor Society ' with internationally recognised historian Dr Onyeka Nubia, starting at 7pm on October 5 in Blakesley Hall, Yardley.
The talk will cover Dr Nubia 's pioneering research into the history of Black Tudor Society. Dr Nubia said: “England 's history is the histories of everyone who has lived or been connected to these islands. I am looking forward to presenting my work at the talk in Birmingham. ”
Soho House, Handsworth will be offering 'A Taste of Handsworth Walking Tour ' on October 15 from 11am to 2:30pm, where visitors will be given the chance to try Georgian delicacies alongside learning about Handsworth 's fascinating food history.
Another event taking place in Soho House is 'Family African-Caribbean Stories and Arts ', performed by storyteller Jan Blake. On October 26,Jan will be performing a selection of traditional African and Caribbean stories at 12pm and 2pm, while the Black Arts Forum will be providing free craft activities for all ages from 11am to 4pm.
Exhibitions such as 'Black Is Beautiful, Blackness Without Apology ' are also on offer. The exhibition is being held at Aston Hall until October 31 during site opening hours and will showcase the transformation of Aston Hall into a young Black girl 's contemporary dressing room. Featuring a combination of contemporary and 18th century items, the display celebrates Black women and the diverse culture within the Black diaspora.
These are just some of the events taking place throughout October 2022, with other interesting and informational exhibitions and talks being held around other Birmingham Museums Trust sites.
