Lichfield gears up for new pedestrianisation plans

Revised plans for the pedestrianisation of Lichfield city centre have been revealed following an extensive six-month consultation.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Blue Badge holders, delivery drivers and permit holders can access the area including Tamworth Street (from its junction with Lombard Street), Conduit Street, Market Street, Breadmarket Street, Bore Street, Dam Street, Sandford Street and Bird Street at any time. 

On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday all vehicles will be restricted from the area with the exception of those delivering from 9pm to 12noon for business and those accessing off-street parking facilities within the area.

From Thursday 16 November robust management of the traffic restrictions commenced and fines issued where appropriate.

A Lichfield Council spokesman said: “We will be supporting visitors over the festive period, with ongoing communications to inform of vehicular access to the city centre from Monday to Wednesday.

“Signage has also been installed to direct visitors to appropriate car parks and car parking maps, detailing the council’s city centre parks, can be obtained from District Council House in Frog Lane. Alternatively, all details can be found on Lichfield District Council’s website.

“A new consultation is now in progress so that we can gather feedback on the revised scheme and all residents, businesses, Blue Badge holders and stakeholders are encouraged to take part. Details of a further survey, being launched in December, will be released soon.”

A Drop-in event will be hosted on Tuesday 23 January 2024, from 2pm to 6pm in the Guildroom at Lichfield Guildhall. 

Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for High Streets and Visitor Economy, Councillor Janice Silvester-Hall, said: “Consultation with members of the public and businesses has been ongoing and by continuously assessing the trial’s impact we aim to enhance the scheme’s effectiveness and contribute to creating a safe, prosperous and vibrant city centre.”
