Hospice store opening creates employment and volunteering opportunities

A new charity shop in Marston Green will raise vital funds for Birmingham Hospice, as well as providing volunteering and employment opportunities for local residents.

The store, on Station Road, is opening on Thursday 5 December and will sell a great range of good quality pre-loved items.

Two paid positions have been created, for a shop manager and relief assistant manager, and the charity will also take on around 40 regular volunteers including shop floor assistants, merchandisers, stock sorters and till operators.

It will complement the hospice’s existing shop in Dovehouse and expands the charity’s presence in the Solihull area.

The hospice’s stores play a crucial role in supporting the community in Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Sandwell, enabling more local people living with a terminal diagnosis to receive the specialist end of life care they need.

Jonathan Varley, head of retail for Birmingham Hospice, said: “We’re delighted to be coming to Marston Green and bringing the charity retailing experience onto this popular high street for the first time.

“Our charity shops play a crucial role in fundraising for the hospice, as well as promoting sustainability by selling good-quality donated items which might otherwise be thrown away.

“We also provide great local employment and volunteering opportunities, with many of our volunteers having gone on to secure jobs as a result of working with us."

Birmingham Hospice’s shops have built a reputation as an innovator in the charity shopping sector by offering a welcoming and bright environment with a priority on building relationships with the community.

The flagship store in Harborne, Reloved Brum, was named Charity Shop of the Year for 2024 at the Charity Retail Awards.

The hospice is currently working hard to prepare the shop for its opening. Anyone who would like to donate goods or wants to talk to someone about volunteering, are encouraged to visit between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday before the opening date.
