Homeless outreach group on the lookout for additional support during Christmas

Homeless outreach group New Bell FC is searching for additional support to ensure the continuation of warm and nourishing meals for the homeless.

New Bell FC’s homeless outreach programme was formed during the Covid-19 pandemic when conventional gatherings and sporting activities came to a halt.

Initially born out of the need to repurpose the club's unused fees due to the suspension of activities, the team rallied together to redirect these resources to aid the homeless.

What started as a modest effort distributing sandwiches in Birmingham City Centre has transformed into a steadfast commitment to providing essentials to those in need.

The recent loss of a long-standing supporter, who played a vital role in supplying meat and vegetables for hot meals, has created a void that the program is eager to fill. The outreach is now actively seeking additional support to keep the homeless warm and fed as winter approaches.

New or gently-used clothing donations are welcomed to help meet this growing demand and provide comfort during the colder months. Contributions in the form of boxes or gift bags are also welcomed and must be dropped off at Broadway Plaza by December 14.

Each thoughtfully assembled box or bag should include essential items such as a can of pop, Christmas chocolate, toiletries, hat, gloves, and socks — all items must be new.

This collective effort aims not only to provide warmth but also to uplift the spirits of those facing challenges during the holiday season.

Sarah Greenfield, the driving force behind this initiative said: “During the darkest times of the pandemic, we found a way to bring light into the lives of those who needed it the most. The spirit of community and compassion has fuelled our efforts, and it's heartening to witness the positive impact we’ve made.”

“Every Saturday night, dedicated volunteers from New Bell Homeless Outreach gather opposite the Town Hall near Victoria Square, offering hot meals, groceries, sandwiches, and clothing to an average of 100 guests per night.

“The success of the program owes much to the generous support of local food outlet retailers, who have consistently donated to the cause.

“The New Bell FC Homeless Outreach are very grateful for any gifts donated to help bring Christmas spirit to those less fortunate”.
