The High Sheriff of the West Midlands visited the NSPCC Helpline and Childline in Birmingham to learn more about the services provided by the child protection charity.

Appointed by the King as the representative of the Crown in the West Midlands, the High Sheriff Douglas Wright was invited to the NSPCC offices in Birmingham to meet charity staff and volunteers.

The many responsibilities of the High Sheriff include the need to promote the welfare of the local community and the voluntary sector, and so it was important for him to better understand how the two charity helplines support children and young people from across the region.

Douglas Wright MBE DL, the High Sheriff of the West Midlands, said: “I would like to give a huge thanks to everyone at the NSPCC Birmingham team, you all made me feel so welcome. My visit was very much a powerful experience as I was able to witness the important work being done to provide support and assistance to children and their families.

“During my visit, I was able to meet volunteers and staff who dedicate so much to helping children. Childline is such a vital service where children feel they’re able to talk in a safe space and to be listened to. “

Amanda Synnott, community fundraising manager for the West Midlands, said: “It was an absolute pleasure for us to host the High Sheriff’s visit at our offices on Hagley Road and to introduce him to our staff and volunteers. Douglas was always engaged, interested and really valued the time spent talking to our helpline staff about day-to-day operations and how we help children.

“Despite being a national charity, the NSPCC has a great regional focus, especially in the West Midlands with our many services, projects and campaigns that do so much to support children and young people. Douglas’ visit presented the team with a great opportunity to demonstrate the value of what we do along with just how important volunteers are to the charity.”
