Forgotten story of Burton hero set to raise funds for charities
The forgotten story of Vale Rawlings, who was a household name in our town 110 years ago, will be portrayed at the Burton Town Hall on Friday 6 December at 7.30pm.
Strikers! tells the forgotten story of Vale Rawlings, who was jailed after trying to help a group of 40 female factory workers who had gone on strike because they could not live on the low wages they were getting.
Many of the workers were aged 13-17 and were getting as little as 2/6 (the equivalent of £18.75 in today's money) for a 55-hour week.
A cast of 29 talented local actors will do a dramatic reading of a play about the strike and what happened to Vale afterwards. It has been written by Burton woman Elaine Pritchard.
All money from ticket sales will be split between SARAC and YMCA Burton.
Souvenir programmes and commemorative postcards will also be on sale on the night to add to the total raised.
Tickets cost £7 for the unwaged, children and seniors.
A standard ticket is £11 and a pay-it-forward ticket at £15 allows those who can afford it to donate more to our two charities.
