Birmingham City Council and DBT Midlands are considering an export mission to Mexico in March 2025, supported via the Birmingham and Solihull Export Support Programme (BASESP).

It will focus on Tech and Advanced Engineering /Manufacturing and will visit Ciudad Mexico and Monterrey.

Mexico is the 12th largest economy in the world and second largest in Latin America.

With a youthful population of over 130 million people, its demand for imports is forecast to grow by 42 per cent between 2021 and 2035.

Mexico has one of the biggest Free Trade Agreement (FTA) networks in the world (15 FTAs, including the UK, CPTPP and USMCA, covering 50 markets and approximately 60 per cent of the world’s GDP).

The USMCA with the US and Canada positions Mexico as a gateway to the world’s largest consumer market and it is also the perfect portal into Latin America.

Mexico’s manufacturing sector is highly integrated into the wider North American economy, particularly in sectors like automotive and aerospace.

The UK’s Trade Continuity Agreement with Mexico provides tariff free access to supply chain opportunities, including the importation of manufacturing technology, machinery and clean technology.

Mexico is the biggest mobile app market in Latin America. Application downloads grew 30 percent during 2023, compared to 2022. Mexico is positioning itself as a super user of software and IT services, primarily, deploying tools in the communications and aerospace sectors.

It is moving towards a service-centric IT industry, where most technologies are offered under a service contract or lease, leading to opportunities in Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Platforms as a Service (PaaS).

The market is expected to grow during 2024, driven by the Cloud software and infrastructure adoption in the country.

There are significant opportunities for Midlands exporters in sub sectors including FinTech, cyber security, e-commerce, data-processing and digitisation.

This mission will provide detailed briefings on the tech / manufacturing tech sector and opportunities in Mexico and 1-1 business meetings with pre-matched prospective partners/customers.

Airfare, hotel and most programme costs will be covered by the BASESP for firms paying business rates to Birmingham or Solihull councils.

They will be asked for a contribution of £750 per person. Limited places are also open to firms from across the Midlands, but without that subsidy. Provisional dates are March 17 to 22 (to be confirmed).

Businesses can express their interest HERE by Thursday, 9 January.

The mission organisers are particularly keen to hear from firms which:

• operate in one or more of the above sub-sectors of opportunity

• are seriously interested in entering or growing in the Mexican market

• are experienced exporters, ideally already exporting beyond the EU

• are financially stable and resourced to meet some mission and follow up costs

• have the capacity to follow up initial contacts and scale up / supply if work is won

• are working with or are willing to work with Birmingham/Solihull Growth Hub and DB
