Fircroft College of Adult Education has launched their latest ‘Building The Future’ programme, aimed at construction firms to explore new and sustainable tools and techniques.

The project, funded by Innovate UK and led by Civic Square, will upskill and introduce innovative and sustainable construction techniques to businesses working in construction.

The fully-funded, part-time, six month Builders programme will start in October.

It will include workshops and classes about material futures, organisational resilience and inspiring site visits with the majority of the learning and mentoring based in Birmingham.

Over the six months, participants are required to attend nine days in-person including a few overnight stays to allow for site visits.

Learning includes:

  • Waste reduction and material re-use
  • Natural and bio-based construction materials
  • Energy efficiency
  • Construction technologies and digital fabrication

To facilitate this dissemination, an initial needs analysis will be conducted with the participant's organisations to identify potential knowledge gaps and skills needs along with opportunities for innovation and growth.

Michael Conway-Jones (pictured), vice-principal at Fircroft College said: “It is our pleasure to introduce this programme to local and forward-thinking construction SME’s who are interested in implementing new, sustainable and innovative skills and techniques.

“This is a real hands-on programme for people working in the industry that includes a range of solutions to issues that many construction companies experience.

“Civic Square are ideal partners for us as they have the knowledge and experience of identifying these issues and teaching these skills that are going to be more essential for us all to adapt successfully to the changes we face in materials and the climate.”
