East Staffordshire Borough Council has confirmed it will be moving to a subscription-based garden waste collection service, following a Cabinet meeting.

The new scheme will be introduced on an ‘opt-in’ subscription basis so that only those residents that use the service will be required to pay for it.

Households will be able to sign up to the subscription service from October 2024, ready for when the service commences in January 2025.

Many Councils across the country already run similar subscription services, with seven from the nine collection authorities in Staffordshire already charging for the collection of garden waste.

The Council will now move to launch a public consultation to inform decisions around the cost of this service to householders, running from 24 May to 5 July.

Cllr Dennis Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The newly approved garden waste subscription service will deliver a financially sustainable service that residents can opt to use or not and reduces the need to draw ever depleting revenue funding from Council front line statutory services that our residents use and rely on.

“I encourage residents to make their voices heard by taking part in our public consultation.”
