Council confirms purchase of Maltings Precinct in Uttoxeter
East Staffordshire Borough Council has confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the Council and Systemshare Ltd for the purchase of the Maltings Precinct in Uttoxeter and the property has now entered into the Council’s ownership.
The purchase of the shopping centre is a key piece in the Council’s plans to assemble the High Street land for future regeneration and follows the purchase of the former Co-op building in 2023, alongside the land that is already owned by the Council.
Speaking on the purchase, Cllr Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to come to an agreement with Systemshare and that all parties could work quickly and effectively to get this done, once negotiations recommenced.
“This is an exciting moment for the Council and hopefully for the residents of Uttoxeter as we can now turn our attention to improving the Maltings area and creating an attractive and inviting gateway to Uttoxeter High Street.”
Malcolm Barrett, owner of Systemshare Ltd, said: “We are pleased that this transaction has now concluded, and we are wholly behind the Councils plans for the re-development of the area.
“We offer them our full support going forward in delivering a scheme that we believe will be for the greater benefit of Uttoxeter”
Whilst the Council continues to work on developing its long term plans for regenerating the Maltings, and looking at the different options for delivering this, it will now turn its attention to how it can make short term enhancements to this important town centre site during 2025/26, working alongside the existing tenants. This will include:
- Refurbishing the Bradley Street toilets;
- Improvement of the connectivity between the High Street, Bus Station and Car Park;
- Installation of improved lighting and seating;
- Greening over the precinct footprint, with planting and trees;
- Working with Staffordshire County Council to facilitate the full pedestrianisation of the High Street.
- Appropriate demolition of the precinct.
These improvements will be finalised and published in the coming months and it is envisaged that they will create a more attractive and inviting town centre area whilst work continues on the delivery of longer term regeneration plans.
