Community invited to share personal sari stories for new exhibition

A new exhibition is inviting people across Birmingham and the Midlands to share personal stories and photographs of their saris, celebrating the region’s rich diversity.

The exhibition, part of MAC’s Sari Season, will run from June to November and is being organised by Sampad South Asian Arts and Heritage in partnership with Midlands Arts Centre.

A sari is a traditional garment worn by women across South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Typically between five and nine yards long, it is draped in various styles, often carrying deep cultural and personal significance.

Contributions could highlight a special memory, a significant life event, or the emotions tied to wearing a particular sari. Selected stories will be featured in the exhibition, offering a collective tapestry of shared experiences.

Speaking about the exhibition Piali Ray, artistic director at Sampad said: "I have so many saris that remind me of someone who gave it to me, or a special occasion – making that sari more than a six yard of beautiful material.

“Is there a story in the folds of your sari? We want your sari memories in this exhibition that will bring it to life!  Why did this sari made you laugh or cry? Why was it comforting and full of love, or why it is especially precious?

“Tell us your sari story, so we can weave it with memories from many others."
