Photography students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) exhibited their work in the College’s University Centre as part of a professional exhibition exploring the wonder of the National Forest.

Photo-Canopy, an in-house art programme at BSDC, is designed to bring students and professional artists together to create contemporary work in response to the National Forest.

The National Forest occupies an area of around 200 square miles and spans the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.

The Photo Canopy project has been an opportunity to explore a variety of themes linked to the National Forest, including its undefined borders, its history and its evolving landscape.

The ‘PC24//REPETITION’ exhibition featured work created by the College’s artist in residence, Melanie King, BSDC students, open call submitters and a selection of pieces from the Photo-Canopy archive.

The exhibition showcased student photographic work produced in response to Photo-Canopy and further invited artist responses, including self-published books, videos and text.

By working with established artists and staff at BSDC, students gain a unique insight into working and exhibiting as professional photographers and artists. This initiative not only explores their local area but also promotes awareness of the National Forest's history and evolution, while expanding the creative scene in Burton and the surrounding areas.

Emma Strange, curriculum director of creative industries at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “The Photo-Canopy Exhibition is a culmination of work and is a fantastic example of partnership projects giving learners professional experience within the creative industries.

“This project highlights the value of collaborating with artists to bring new perspectives and encourages students to appreciate and explore their local environment.”
