Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) has joined forces with building product manufacturer, IG Masonry Support, to help develop the skills of future bricklayers at the Stephen Burke Construction Academy (SBCA).

The college welcomed teams from IG Masonry Support, along with the chief executive of South Derbyshire District Council, Dr. Justin Ives, to officially launch the partnership.

The Stephen Burke Construction Academy offers a bricklaying workshop where students can develop their practical skills in realistic environments.

As part of the partnership, IG Masonry Support has equipped the workshop with modern tools and materials, enabling students to gain industry-recognised qualifications while honing their trade in a real-world setting.

A newly installed steelwork rig at the SBCA now allows students to practice constructing brickwork panels similar to those used in commercial structures.

This advanced feature complements the existing housebuilding elements within the curriculum, ensuring students develop a comprehensive skill set.

Through this partnership, IG Masonry Support have also donated additional resources, including 25 packs of bricks and an ongoing supply of consumables for the workshop.

These contributions ensure that students have access to high-quality materials for hands-on training.

Branded t-shirts featuring the logos of IG Masonry Support and BSDC have also been provided for students.

In addition to material donations, IG Masonry Support has delivered Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events for both students and staff, providing valuable opportunities to expand their knowledge and engage directly with industry experts.

Geraint Davies, director of curriculum at BSDC, said: “We are grateful to IG Masonry Support for these contributions, which have elevated the quality of our brickwork and masonry programmes.

“Working with local employers is a key part of our curriculum development, and these relationships play an important role in preparing students for the workforce and helping them develop the practical skills required for successful careers in the construction industry.”

Dr. Justin Ives, chief executive of South Derbyshire District Council also said: "We are delighted to see this partnership between IG Masonry Support and Burton and South Derbyshire College.

“This collaboration will provide invaluable opportunities for young people in our area to develop the skills they need to succeed in the construction industry. It's great to see local businesses supporting our community in this way.”
