City firm boosts Bobby Moore cancer fund
Staff at Birmingham-based specialist express freight carrier Simpex Express raised vital funds towards a cancer charity formed in honour of England 's World-Cup winning captain, the late Bobby Moore.
Workers at the group joined the Football Shirt Friday initiative to help tackle bowel cancer by wearing their favourite football shirts, sharing a selfie on social media and donating to the Bobby Moore Fund.
The former football star - who led the only England team to win the World Cup in 1966 - was only 51 when he died in February 1993 after suffering from bowel cancer. His widow Stephanie set up the Bobby Moore Fund as part of Cancer Research UK to raise money for pioneering bowel cancer research.
Teams from Simpex offices in Birmingham and Leeds joined in and raised £325, which was match-funded by the company, raising a total of £650, which will go towards funding new bowel cancer research for Cancer Research UK.
Sarah Shemmans, Accounts Assistant Manager at Simpex Express, said: “With 46 people losing their life to the disease every day in the UK, it 's such a good cause for us to get involved with. Since the Bobby Moore Fund started the UK has seen mortality rates for bowel cancer fall by more than 30 per cent, which is amazing. ”
