A stalwart of local charity YMCA Burton, Tom Foster (pictured), has finally retired after 28 years of dedicated service.

Facilities manager, Tom has been with the Charity since 1996 which makes him the longest service member of staff within YMCA Burton’s history.

On his last day, Tom was surprised with a little gathering to give him cards and gifts and to show him a video of staff messages collected ready for his retirement.

Tom said: “It has been a privilege of being able to actively participate in the mission of Burton upon Trent and District YMCA in meeting the needs of all those God has called us to minister to.

“No matter what challenges have arisen and through all the changes that society has undergone under various administrations, our movement has been there to provide a glimmer of hope to those who for any number of reasons, have fallen on hard times.

“My time at Burton YMCA has been transformative and my own social horizons have been very much broadened, adding considerably to one’s quality of life.”

Tom plans to spend his retirement by working part time and also spending time with his wife and family and to make use of his newly acquired bus pass.

CEO of YMCA Burton, Paul Laffey said: “I remember when I first met Tom and was and always have been in awe of his extensive knowledge of all things Burton-on-Trent, history and the Christian faith.

“He has always been someone to depend on and we will certainly miss him but we all believe this retirement is well-deserved so we wish him all the best, and good health for the future. Thank you, Tom, for all that you have done for us.”
