The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund is hosting an official opening of Stine’s Home from Home, part of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity’s Home Away from Home Appeal.

Stine’s Home from Home provides brain tumour patients and their families who live far away, free accommodation just a short walk from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where they’re having treatment, keeping families together during difficult times.

The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was founded in 2015 by former England cricketer Ashley Giles MBE and his wife Stine, following her diagnosis and battle with multiple brain tumours.

Stine said: “Stine’s Home from Home means a lot to me and makes me really emotional.

“When I was first diagnosed with a brain tumour I had a very young family, my daughter was four and my son was six. Having a home like this to stay with my husband and our children so close to the hospital would have meant a lot to me and my family.”

Brain tumour patients come from all over the West Midlands and even across the country to receive treatment and surgery at the QE.

At what is already an extremely challenging time, Stine’s Home from Home takes away the extra stress of having to find somewhere to stay near to the hospital, as well as having to pay for travel and parking costs.

Having loved ones close by makes the treatment journey for these patients that little bit easier. The accommodation provides a calm and relaxing space away from the hospital setting where families can enjoy quality time together and feel some sort of normality.

Will Garratt, lead neuro oncology clinical nurse specialist at QE said, “Stine’s Home from Home makes a huge difference to our patients. Having somewhere for patients and their relatives to stay before and after surgery or during radiotherapy treatment massively helps with recovery.

“It really gives them peace of mind knowing their loved ones are close by and is a lifeline during such a difficult time.”

Since The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was launched it has proudly funded the very first brain tumour research nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and continues to grow, funding vital research, investing in state-of-the-art equipment and supporting brain tumour patients.
