Carers Rights event launched in Solihull
A day of events to mark Carers Rights Day 2024 has been launched, featuring a number of Solihull Chamber members.
Organised by Carers Trust Solihull, the various event sessions are centred around Carers Rights Day, taking place on Thursday 21 November. The day aims to highlight the vital role unpaid carers play in society and to ensure they are aware of their legal entitlements and the support available to them. This year’s theme is ‘recognising your rights’.
Employment, family and private client legal experts from law firm Sydney Mitchell will be hosting a free, drop-in lunchtime event where people juggling work with caring for a loved one at home can find out about their legal rights and entitlements.
Taking place between 12 noon and 3:15pm on Wednesday 20 November 2024, at The Loft, 10 West Mall (opposite Chelmsley Wood Library), Second Floor, Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre, Chelmsley Wood, Solihull, the Carers Rights Information Day event will be an informal social luncheon and marks this year’s national Carers Rights Day.
Carers Rights Day raises awareness of the legal rights and financial entitlements of the UK’s 5.7 million unpaid carers, helps them get the support they need and the recognition they deserve.
This year’s theme is ‘Recognising Your Rights’, and at the event, the Sydney Mitchell team will be on hand to help local people with caring responsibilities at home, to better understand what the law says they can expect in terms of support and flexibility from their employers, and the financial support and benefits they’re entitled to.
Tracy Creed, a Partner and head of the Wills Trusts & Probate Department at Sydney Mitchell, explained: “It is estimated that over five million people juggle work and care in the UK – the equivalent of 1 in 7 people in every workplace. Given the stresses and strains that can result from balancing work and caring, it is unsurprising that 1 in 6 carers give up work or reduce their hours to care.”
The firm’s Emma-Louise Hewitt (pictured), a Partner and head of the Employment Department, adds: “Carers Rights Day is important for many reasons, particularly because it highlights the number of people facing this almost impossible juggling act. It also gives organisations like ours the chance to help them navigate the challenges of their personal caring journey, which can often feel overwhelming and isolating. At the event, our legal experts will be available to answer questions and provide resources, guidance and legal advice which we hope will go some way towards easing their worries.”
She adds: “Carers Trust Solihull provides vital help and support to carers in and around Solihull who are caring for loved ones with dementia, physical or mental health issues, or learning disabilities. Sydney Mitchell has supported the charity for several years, and we jumped at the opportunity to support this event, because it gives our team the chance to share their knowledge in a way that could make a real difference.”
Pauline Manby (pictured), Partnership Manager at Carers Trust Solihull adds: “We approached Sydney Mitchell about our plans for the Carers Rights Day daytime event because of the firm’s unparalleled expertise in carers' rights, deep understanding of carers' challenges, and our trusted, longstanding partnership. The charity is lucky to have had the support of the firm for several years. We are so grateful for its time and unwavering support, which has empowered the charity and made a lasting impact on the lives of local carers.”
