Birmingham Rep nominated for UK Theatre Awards
Two Birmingham Rep productions have been recognised in the UK Theatre Awards’ 2024.
The Rep builds and launches productions in its home city, attracting the best creative talent nationally and internationally to make shows for its stages.
Tony Award-winner Matt Doyle has been nominated for Best Performance in a Musical for his performance as the legendary artist Frank Sinatra, in Sinatra The Musical, produced by Birmingham Rep in association with Universal Music Group Theatrical and Frank Sinatra Enterprises.
On receiving the news of his nomination, Matt Doyle said that he is: “Floored and honoured to have received this nomination. Sinatra: The Musical is on my mind every day.”
He added: “I strive to continue to honour Frank's immense legacy with the support and guidance of the incredible Tina Sinatra. I cannot wait to return to the fantastic show we all created at The Rep.”
Michael Taylor has also been nominated for Best Design for his set design on Bhangra Nation which was then brought to life and built in-house in The Rep’s set and prop building, scenic art, wardrobe and technical workshops.
Bhangra Nation was produced by The Rep, in association with Mara Isaacs, Tom Kirdahy and Peggy Koenig. Bhangra Nation won the Eastern Eye ACTA Award for Best Production in May of this year.
Michael Taylor said: “I’m thrilled about the nomination, and it’s a great tribute to the brilliant team at the Rep. Bhangra Nation was a beautiful show to work on.”
Rachael Thomas, The Rep’s chief executive, said: “We’re thrilled for Matt and Michael, two of the many stellar talents we worked with to create Sinatra: The Musical and Bhangra Nation, shows that we were immensely proud to build and launch in Birmingham. Our heartfelt congratulations to both.”
The Rep would also like to offer a congratulations to all other nominees for this year's UK Theatre Awards, especially to Swim, Aunty, Swim! that has been nominated for Best New Play, which was directed by The Rep’s own Deputy Artistic Director, Madeleine Kludje.
