Training course - is this course suitable for you?

Background: Commodity codes

Using the correct commodity code for your goods ensures minimised delays and smooth trade, accurate taxation, and necessary compliance with Customs regulations.

  1. Completing Customs Declarations & other paperwork: You apply your commodity codes to any paperwork when exporting and importing, including your Customs declarations.
  2. The amount of Tax and Duty being paid: The commodity code you use influences the amount of tax and duty you pay when importing or exporting products to different countries.
  3. Legal and Safety Compliance: Correct commodity codes ensure compliance with legal and safety regulations, especially for dangerous or restricted items.

Navigating complex export documentation and compliance is challenging.

This course offers practical tools to determine the correct commodity code to use, supporting the optimisation of Customs processes for your global shipments.

Is it for me?

The course is ideal if you:

  • Work in an import or export environment and need to navigate how and which commodity codes are used to support Customs compliance.
  • Receive orders from outside of the UK and then complete the relevant paperwork to move the goods overseas.
  • Want expert advice to broaden your Customs knowledge, support cost effective business processes, ensure compliance and mitigate risk.

Course content

The international system for coding products for Customs purposes when we trade internationally is generally regarded as complex and difficult to understand.

The penalties for wrongly assigning a code to a product could be severe, and relying on a freight forwarder’s judgement does not release the producer or shipper from responsibility for accurately describing the goods.

This half-day course will explore the implications of using the incorrect codes for your goods, not just for you but for your customer, and will also include guidance on the UK Global Tariff.

Course topics:
  • Background to Trade Commodity Codes
  • Make up of a commodity code
  • General Interpretive Rules (GIR)
  • Building a commodity code
  • How to find a commodity code
  • Hard to classify goods
  • Advanced Tariff Ruling
  • Things to consider
